Your
baby may sleep during most of his pictures. After all, that's what
newborn babies do! Sleeping babies make great photographic
subjects; they look so natural & content and are much more
cooperative in posing. If your baby is awake during his session,
don't expect smiles. You'll have tons on smiling pictures
later. These pictures are meant to catch your baby's first gentle
moments in the world before he learns to laugh and respond to his/her
environment.
On
Picture Day:
Many babies have flaky skin, so a gentle massage with lotion
before the photo session is always a good idea. Avoid
giving your baby a bath the day of pictures. It can make
them upset and make their skin more flaky. It is best to
have a nice quiet day before your photo session so baby is
rested and content. For your baby's comfort, please feed him/her
immediately before the session. However, don't worry if your
baby has to eat sometime during his/her photo shoot.
Clothing
Choices:
The best outfit for these
pictures is the one he came in, just his own skin with diaper
optional. Parents may choose
to be in as many or as few of the pictures as you wish. At the
very least, you will be a backdrop for some of the pictures, so
please wear a solid color with long sleeves. Your hands will be in the
pictures-- French manicures look best. Avoid color polish
of any shade and bright red lipstick.
For
a timeless classic look, I recommend a monochromatic color
scheme: either black background with parents dressed in
long-sleeved black shirts with black pants or a white background
with parents dressed in long-sleeved white shirts and blue jeans
(OK, so the white background color scheme isn't totally
monochromatic, but you get the idea!) If you are
trying to choose between light or dark, try to decide what look
you would prefer. Wearing black will create dramatic portraits.
Wearing white will create an elegant, softer look. Mom may also
wish to bring a tube top if she would like a baby on bare
shoulder portrait. No tie on Dad for the
pictures--too formal for these photographs.
Older
siblings. I
love
getting older children into the pictures. They also can wear
very simple, plain colored clothing. If the big brother or
sister is really still a baby him or herself, matching onsies or
matching bare chests make a great picture. Sometimes it is easy
and natural to get older siblings into the pictures, and
sometimes, no matter how encouraging we are, it is
impossible. I am happy to strategize with you in advance
to give us the best possible chance of catching the older
sibling being loving with the baby, but this will be dependent
on your older child too. We can’t MAKE it happen, no matter
how hard we try. Those dear little people are striving to deal
with a new situation, and sometimes a photo session just throws
them into overload, and they just will not cooperate no matter
how much they are coaxed and cajoled. Of course, having
full tummies and being well rested will help give us our best
opportunity for success
